Petronas' LNG Complex in Bintulu is now 5G private network enabled

KUALA LUMPUR: The deployment of the private 5G network at the Petronas liquefied natural gas (LNG) Complex in Bintulu, Sarawak, marks a significant step to accelerate digital innovation in the oil and gas industry, which contributes about 20 per cent to the country's gross domestic product.

The Petronas LNG Complex in Bintulu is the world's third largest LNG plant in a single location, with a production capacity of 29.8 million tonnes per  annum. Deployment of the 5G network is expected to improve productivity and  increase operational efficiency, and safety across critical production processes.

The oil and gas ecosystem comprises more than 3,500 businesses in Malaysia,  including international oil companies, support and service providers, as well as  manufacturers.

"According to a ResearchAndMarkets.com report, while specific adoption rates can  vary, the global market for 5G in oil and gas is expected to grow at a compound  annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 26 percent from 2023 to 2030. Energy  companies around the world are racing to modernise their operations, and I applaud Petronas, Telekom Malaysia and Digital Nasional Bhd for taking the lead in digitalising Malaysia's energy sector," Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said in a statement to mark the deployment of a private 5G network at the Petronas liquefied natural gas  (LNG) Complex in Bintulu, Sarawak.

Following the historic launch of Malaysia's first private 5G network for enterprise at  Petronas' Regasification Terminal Sungai Udang (RGTSU) Melaka in 2022, the new Bintulu site is one of four locations equipped with the technology.

This deployment is a collaboration between Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Telekom Malaysia (TM), and is supported by Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB).

An event to inaugurate the deployment of the private 5G networkwas attended by the Sarawak Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications, Datuk Liwan Lagang; Petronas LNG Assets, Gas and Maritime Business senior vice president Abang Yusuf Abang Puteh; Petronas Malaysia LNG group of companies managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) Mohamed Syazwan Abdullah @ Laga Jenggi; TM  group CEO Amar Huzaimi Md Deris; DNB chief strategy oficer, Datuk Ahmad Zaki Zahid.
