Bursa Malaysia ends midday positive as interest in banks, plantation stocks prop market

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia ended the midday session in positive territory, driven by gains in the financial services and plantation sectors.

By 12:30 p.m., the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) had risen by 0.36 per cent, up 5.89 points to 1,657.38, from Monday's close of 1,651.49.

The broader market was also up, with gainers outnumbering losers 448 to 377, while 498 stocks remained unchanged.

Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd said, with the rebound in US technology stocks, traders might seek to buy undervalued technology stocks locally.

"Additionally, Apple's 'Glowtime' conference, where new versions of the iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch has been unveiled, could generate buying interest in Apple-related tech stocks on our local exchange," it said.

Malacca Securities noted that, due to the robust performance of the ringgit, they continue to prefer the consumer sector.

"Furthermore, uptrends have been observed in the construction, utilities, oil & gas, and renewable energy sectors," it added.

In commodity markets, Brent oil experienced a slight recovery as traders took advantage of lower prices following hurricane warnings that could impact the US Gulf Coast.

At the same time, gold prices steadied near US$2,500 as traders waited for a potential rate cut from the Federal Reserve.

Meanwhile, crude palm oil prices remained under RM3,900.
