KUALA LUMPUR: Furniture retailer Federal International Holdings Bhd (FIHB), and property developer Masteron Group, are two companies Datuk Dr Choy Fook On and wife built on familial spirit.
At 88 years old, Fook On continues to be a guiding force behind the Masteron Group's legacy, laying the foundation for the company's success over decades. His vision and entrepreneurial spirit have paved the way for the next generation to elevate the company to new heights.
These companies, founded in 1963 and 1981 respectively continue to be the flag-bearer of a culture of collaboration, trust, and shared responsibility.
FIHB began as a furniture retail business and, over 27 years, expanded into manufacturing and interior renovation, highlighting Fook On's dedication to craftsmanship and innovation.
In 1980, Federal Furniture (M) Sdn Bhd was established, signaling a strategic pivot toward exports, manufacturing, and renovation.
The company capitalised on Malaysia's furniture industry, securing significant contracts with leading international hotel chains.
By 1982, Federal Furniture (1982) Sdn Bhd was formed, focusing specifically on furniture manufacturing and exports.
In the 1990s, Fook On recognised opportunities for further growth and diversification, leading to the company's listing on the Bursa Malaysia Stock Exchange.
Property developer Masteron Group was founded in 1981 by Fook On and quickly rose to prominence as a key player in Malaysia's construction and property development sector.
According to Fook On, he ventured into the property business because of its symbiotic relationship with the furniture industry, noting that where there is property, furniture naturally follows.
Fook On said family involvement has been a crucial part in the success of its business.
"I followed in my father's footsteps, starting as a carpenter before venturing into business. I also mastered the craft of furniture-making.
"To succeed in business, education is essential. I studied in London, and I made sure to send all my children there as well," Fook On shared.
He expressed his confidence in his children and grandchildren, trusting them to manage the business and uphold the legacy they have built together.
Under the leadership of Datuk Choy Wai Ceong, 60, the Masteron group is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Focused on making the company environment social and governance (ESG)-friendly, Wai Ceong is spearheading efforts to integrate sustainability into the company's core operations.
His leadership has not only steered Masteron towards international ventures but also helped the company secure a RM1.1 billion pipeline of jobs benefitting both Masteron group and FIHB.
The emphasis on ESG, sustainability, and innovation aligns with Masteron's vision for the future, reinforcing its commitment to responsible development while maintaining growth on a global scale.
FIHB, the construction and timber-focused entity under the Masteron umbrella, is helmed by Datuk Choy Wai Hin. His strategic leadership ensures FIHB's alignment with Masteron's broader vision of sustainability and innovation while leveraging its strengths to drive key projects.
Both leaders are committed to future-proofing the business through sustainable development practices and innovative approaches to tackle emerging global challenges, ensuring a brighter and more responsible future for Masteron Group and its stakeholders.
Fook On'ss grandson, Choy Kin Mann, has stepped into the family business as well, bringing fresh perspective while upholding the family's values.
"My grandfather is truly brilliant. I have always looked up to him, and I feel incredibly fortunate that he's still around to guide us all," he said.
Choy's legacy underscores the vital role of family in business.
This familial spirit extends to the company's workforce, with many employees dedicating their careers to FIHB and Masteron, playing a crucial role in its enduring success.
