#TECH: UTAR service robot bags third place at RoboCup league

KAJANG: Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Service Robot by UTAR

Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) team won third place in the RoboCup@Home Education Online Challenge 2021.

The five-member-team, Yong Cherng Liin, Chong Kah Yoon, Cheong Wy Joe, Chung Pu Onn, Kok Siong Yuan, and team advisor, Ir Danny Ng Wee Kiat started their journey building the UTAR Robot Service, which is a platform that serves as a development platform for service robots, since three years ago.

Equipped with LIDAR, depth camera and IMU, the robot can sense its environment as well as conduct simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) to navigate autonomously in any indoor environment. It can also detect speech and object recognition through the use of AI.

Competing in the Open Platform category, the team and other participants were required to use custom built robots for the challenge events as the challenge focused on both hardware and software designs too.

The RoboCup@Home Education Online Challenge 2021 saw participation from various economic backgrounds from around the world including entries from the United States, China, India, Spain, Macau, India, Thailand and Mexico. The RoboCup leagues was also held to promote home learning amid the current global pandemic situation which restricts social gatherings including schooling.

During the challenge, a series of robot building short courses for beginners via online classroom was also conducted as well as technical awards challenge and live streaming of remote participation in the online challenge too.
