#TECH: Pgeon in move to protect riders

KUALA LUMPUR: IN its effort to better protect its riders, delivery serivce company Pgeon recently introduced Pgeon Care+ insurance programme.

Pgeon is a subsidiary of EasyParcel, one of Malahsia's largest delivery service booking platforms, that also provides marketing tools for micro-businesses. With Pgeon, it has over 5,000 delivery and pick-up points namely Pgeon Points that lead the way in the logistics industry.

The company said Pgeon Care+ caters to part-time and full-time delivery riders along with warehouse staff, Hub Heroes, with 24/7 nationwide coverage.

Part-timers can claim up to 10,000 for medical expenses, up to RM9,000 for the cumulative daily hospital income, and up to RM1,000 for smart devices.

Pgeon's chief executive officer, Clarence Leong said throughout the pandemic and moving on from there, we saw a huge influx of delivery drivers and that includes part-timers as well.

"More people were out of a job and looking for a way to make ends meet, naturally part-time delivery jobs became incredibly appealing" he said.

"These part-time riders have been integral in Pgeon growing our services and meeting increasing customer demand. We were happy to provide them with opportunities then and today we are proud to be the first in the country to provide them with the insurance protection that they much deserve," he added.

Pgeon's expansion is due to the increasing number of reports of road fatalities and injuries among both full-time and part-time riders and drivers, and Pgeon Care+ programme can rectify the gap.

With over 900 delivery riders and 70 part-time drivers for both Pgeon Care programme and Pgeon Care+, every employee is insured against on-the-road dangers.

"The riders are the backbone of our service. Come day or night, rain or shine, they move fast to ensure every customer gets their package on time in perfect condition. It only makes sense to take care of our employees, regardless of their status as part-timers or full-timers, as they all contribute to the company," said Leong.
