#TECH: Samsung refines Z Flip's capabilities

I recently got my hands on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6.

As someone who's always excited about innovative technology, I couldn't wait to test its capabilities, especially when it comes to photography.

Being a pioneer in flip phone technology, Samsung has shown its capability in this area, and what users want. After six generations of the Galaxy Z Flip series, the company has truly perfected the balance between style, functionality, and creativity, all packed into this powerful, pocket-sized foldable.

Design and display

The first thing that struck me was the sleek design of the Galaxy Z Flip6.

When it comes to flip phones, one of the main questions or concerns people often raised is the reliability of the hinge. Will it last? Will be break over time?

After six generations, Samsung has refined its hinge technology to make the folding experience smoother.

I realise the crease in the middle is far less noticeable compared to earlier models, making the Dynamic AMOLED screen look almost seamless.

When unfolded, the 6.7-inch display is bright and vibrant, with a peak brightness of 2,600 nits, which makes it easy to see even under direct sunlight.

The compact 3.4-inch Super AMOLED FlexWindow is not just for looks; it allows me to access notifications, Samsung Health updates, and even respond to texts without unfolding the phone.

The customisation options are great, too, with AI-powered features that adjust the wallpaper and screen layout based on the weather and time of day.

Camera performance

I took the Z Flip6 out for a spin in various photography genres: landscape, low light, macro, and everyday shots.

The new 50MP wide and 12MP ultra-wide sensors offer excellent detail and clarity, while the 2x optical zoom is perfect for noise-free photos.

Landscape shots were a joy, capturing vibrant colours and sharp details. The ultra-wide lens added that dramatic touch, letting me fit more into the frame without compromising on quality.

Low-light photography was equally impressive, thanks to the Nightography feature. I tried it during a city night walk, and the images were crisp, with minimal noise even in challenging lighting.

The built-in HDR for videos also makes low-light videography a breeze, which is perfect for capturing night scenes or dimly lit environments.

For macro shots, I was surprised by how well the camera handled close-ups of flowers and small objects. The colours popped, and the level of detail was just astonishing for a phone camera. Auto Zoom and FlexCam made it easy to frame the shots perfectly without much hassle, allowing me to focus on getting creative rather than fiddling with settings.

One of my favourite features is FlexMode, which lets you set the phone at various angles between 75 and 115 degrees. This is especially handy for hands-free photography or when watching videos — no need for a tripod.

Performance and battery life

Powered by the latest chipsets and boasting a redesigned printed board assembly, the Z Flip6 is a fast device.

Apps open instantly, and multitasking is smooth, even with several apps running simultaneously. It also has a larger vapour chamber, which means the phone doesn't heat up as much, even when using demanding apps or during prolonged camera sessions.

Battery life is always a concern with foldables, but the Z Flip6's 4,000mAh battery performs admirably though I wish it has a bigger 5,000mAh capacity.

Anyway, I could go a full day with moderate use, including taking photos, streaming videos, and browsing social media, without desperately searching for a charger.

The optimisation between hardware and software is noticeable, providing longer usage time without compromising on performance.

Security

One of the things I appreciate about Samsung devices is the emphasis on security, and the Z Flip6 doesn't disappoint. Samsung Knox offers multi-layer security, protecting against threats with real-time detection.

The Enhanced Data Protection feature adds another layer of privacy, ensuring my data stays secure, even when backing up to the cloud.

Conclusion

Overall, the Galaxy Z Flip6 is a fantastic piece of technology that balances innovation with everyday practicality. Its compact design, superb camera capabilities, and creative FlexMode make it more than just a smartphone — it's a tool for expression.

Whether you're a photography enthusiast, a social media creator, or someone who simply loves having the latest tech, the Z Flip6 is sure to inspire and impress.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is priced at RM4,999 (256GB) and RM5,599 (512GB), and comes in blue, yellow, mint and silver shadow.
