#TECH: Over US$7 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions blocked on App Store over four years

APPLE said that its App Store has prevented over US$7 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions from 2020 to 2023, with more than US$1.8 billion blocked in 2023 alone.

In its latest fraud prevention analysis, Apple revealed that it rejected over 1.7 million app submissions in 2023 for failing to meet the App Store's stringent standards. Additionally, nearly 374 million developer and customer accounts were terminated, and close to 152 million fraudulent ratings and reviews were removed.

Apple said its antifraud measures include monitoring and investigating fraudulent activity, utilising sophisticated tools, and blocking over 14 million stolen credit cards and more than 3.3 million accounts from transacting again.

It also said that the efforts extend beyond the App Store, with more than 47,000 illegitimate apps blocked from pirate storefronts and nearly 3.8 million illicit installation attempts stopped through the Developer Enterprise Program.

Apple's App Review team, comprising over 500 experts, reviewed nearly 6.9 million app submissions in 2023, helping over 192,000 developers publish their first app. The team also rejected 248,000 app submissions for spam, copying other apps, or misleading users, and over 375,000 for privacy violations.

Apple said its commitment to trust and safety includes preventing credit card fraud through secure payment technologies like Apple Pay. In 2023, more than 3.5 million stolen credit cards were blocked from making fraudulent purchases, and over 1.1 million accounts were banned from transacting again.
