THINGS are looking brighter for villagers of Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Relang in Gombak, Selangor.
Salcon Bhd had organised the Lighting Up Our Community 3.0 project to provide sustainable energy solutions to the Orang Asli.
Salcon Engineering Bhd chief operating officer Jamiluddin Amini Sulaiman said the project sought to improve the wellbeing of the Orang Asli.
"By providing electricity through renewable energy, we hope to reduce their living costs and boost their productivity."
The initiative brought together 21 volunteers who installed 11 solar LED batten lights and two solar street lights in eight homes and at the community hall.
These efforts benefitted 49 residents, including nine children, offering nighttime illumination that allows the children to study and residents to engage in evening activities.
Jamiluddin said the volunteers set up, tested and inspected the system.
The volunteers trained the residents to maintain the lights, he added.
"This approach not only ensures the sustainability of the project but also fosters a sense of ownership in the community.
"Salcon is devoted to boosting the quality of life of underserved communities.
"We believe that by delivering reliable and sustainable energy solutions, we are not just meeting immediate needs but also fostering long-term development.
"Through our efforts, we aim to build a brighter and more sustainable future for all."
He said Salcon also prepared humanitarian aid comprising essential food and school supplies.
"These items were gathered through donations from our staff."
Intan, a villager, said: "We are grateful to Salcon for bringing light into our homes.
"My children can now study and do their homework at night, which was difficult before. This initiative has improved our lives."
Salcon's projects have included installing solar-powered lights in Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Tunggul and Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Gabai, as well as a solar-powered water filter at the community hall in Kampung Orang Asli Paya Lebar.
