KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesian singer and actress Julia Perez has passed away from cervical cancer today at the age of 36.
The artiste, whose real name was Yulia Rachmawati, was diagnosed with Stage 4 cervical cancer in 2014 and had undergone chemotherapy.
News of her passing was shared by her sister Nia Anggia via her Instagram account, captioning a photo of herself holding the hand of her sister lying on a hospital bed.
She wrote: "Innalillahiwainnailaihirojiun, our beloved sister Julia Perez has passed away. Please pray for her soul and thank you for all the moral support given to us all this while. I love you Yuli."
Julia, also known simply as Jupe, first began her career as a model in France where she met her first husband, Damien Perez.
When she returned to Indonesia, she later became an actress, before launching her singing career in 2008.
She has recorded four dangdut albums – Kamasutra, Aku Rapoppo, Dangdut Galau and The Best of Julia Perez.
