SonaOne's Malay rap skills under fire from Netizens

KUALA LUMPUR: Two of Malaysia’s hottest artistes, Zizan Razak and SonaOne, have come together for the first time to collaborate on a new single Chentaku.

But it was reported that there was a bit of static online from certain netizens who were of the opinion that the singer and rapper known as SonaOne should not sing or rap in the Malay language.

The hip hop artiste, whose real name is Mikael Adam Mohd Rafee, was reported to have said that he was not entirely comfortable communicating in Malay because he had spent 18 years of his life growing up in France.

“My pronunciation and enunciation of Malay words are not as good as how I speak in English since I only started speaking in Malay when I was 18,” he added.

Unperturbed by the online criticism, the 28-year-old said that he would continue to learn and hone his skills in the language and would not give up singing in Malay.

As for the new song itself, he explained that the track had been created with the popular actor and comedian quite some time ago.

“The song was actually written with Zizan quite a while back, like eight years or so,” said SonaOne.

He added: “It was only a few months ago when we met at an event that we thought about the song again. So we decided to get into the studio to record it.”

The collaboration is certainly a winning combination with a fresh and easy-going sound that’s very much in line with the current taste of today’s young music lovers.

Chentaku is about a young man who falls in love at first sight with a girl and tries to get to know her but both are overcome with shyness the first time they meet.

The song, executive produced by Joe Flizzow, was composed by SonaOne with lyrics written by Joe and Zizan.

So far, the lyric video to the song, which was uploaded on YouTube on May 18, has garnered close to 2 million views.
