Kenny Chan of 'Baba dan Nyonya' fame dies

KUALA LUMPUR: If you grew up watching local television in Malaysia in the 80s and 90s, there is minimal chance you would have missed the iconic 'Baba dan Nyonya' sitcom.

Who can forget Bibik Kim Neo and Ah Chim, two feisty 'ladies' who would often sit over a coffee table talking about anything from food to Kim Neo's son.

Datuk Kenny Chan, the man who brought Bibik Kim Neo to life, passed away last night following a lung infection.

The Star Online quoted Chan's wife, fellow Baba dan Nyonya actress, Fern Loo who confirmed the veteran actor's passing at a hospital in Melaka.

Chan was 68 and had three children.

While many may identify Chan as an actor, he was also a chef who owned a restaurant called Big Nyonya in Melaka.

According to the restaurant's website, Chan inherited his Peranakan cooking skills from his late grandmother.

As for his acting side, Chan reprised his role as Bibik Kim Neo in a cameo for Namewee's Nasi Lemak 2.0 together with Chee Hood Siong who played Ah Chim in 2011.

Chee passed away that same year from a heart attack.
