#Showbiz: Netizens to boycott 'Polis Evo 2' for touching on sensitive issues?

KUALA LUMPUR: It seems that Polis Evo 2, one of the most anticipated local movies of this year, has been shown in a bad light.

A recent news report had highlighted that there was a call by certain quarters to boycott the yet-to-be-screened action movie.

This was due to some scenes that were seen in the movie’s trailer which some had deemed to have touched on sensitive issues with regards to religion.

In the sequel to Polis Evo, actor Hasnol Rahmat portrays the movie’s antagonist, a terrorist group leader Hafsyam Jauhari, who is also seen clad in a turban.

This image had drawn criticism for insinuating a negative association with someone donning the headgear.

Others had also accused the storyline of showing Islam in a bad light by linking it to terrorism, villainy and extremism.

In a recent post on his Facebook account, Islamic preacher and writer Dr Riduan Mohd Nor had called for the Muslim public to boycott the movie.

In his long post on the matter, he labelled the movie a “rubbish film”.

Meanwhile, the movie’s lead star Zizan Razak was quick to address the issue in a recent uploaded live video.

In it, he lamented how some people quickly pass a judgement before watching the actual movie.

The actor added that he was also disappointed that certain parties had called for a boycott since the entire production crew had put in a lot of hard work, time and effort to make the movie.

Zizan later made a plea to the public to go and watch the movie first before forming any preconceived opinions or biases against it.

Polis Evo 2 is set to premiere in cinemas nationwide on Nov 22.
