#Showbiz: Ziana Zain says sorry for contempt of court

SHAH ALAM: Singer Ziana Zain has tendered an apology to the Magistrate’s Court here after pleading guilty to contempt of court.

She admitted making a statement to the media about alleged physical abuse by her former husband Armin Zaharin Ahmad Zambri against one of their children.

In her apology yesterday, Ziana or Siti Roziana Zain, 50, said she did so unintentionally and promised not to repeat her mistake.

“Thank you for giving me a chance to apologise. I did not intend to be in contempt of court, and my statement was more of a personal matter. I promise not to repeat this act.”

Ziana, who was accompanied by her brother, singer Anuar Zain, made the apology in front of Magistrate Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin.

Raja Noor Adilla accepted the apology, and warned Ziana to refrain from making further statements to the public.

Ziana was represented by her lawyer Lokman Mazlan while Armin, who was not present in court, was represented by Mohd Amir Farid Mohd Nawawi.

Armin, 53, had earlier claimed that Ziana made several statements to the media, specifically the magazine Intrend last June, about his on-going trial.

He claimed that his ex-wife’s statements were prejudicial towards his character.

Ziana and Armin were divorced at the Syariah Lower Court here on July 12.

They tied the knot on May 9, 1998, and have four children — Muhammad Aiman, 18, Muhammad Ammar, 14, and nine-year-old fraternal twins Muhammad Ariel and Siti Nur Kaseh.

On May 15, Armin was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt to his son.

Armin is alleged to have used a cane to cause cuts and bruises on his son’s arms at their house in Denai Alam, Shah Alam on Feb 24.

He was initially charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 10 years’ imprisonment or with a fine or whipping, or any two of the punishments on conviction, before the charge was amended to Section 324 read with 326A of the Penal Code.

If convicted, the former air steward can be punished with a jail term which may extend to a year, or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
