Where is our female hero?

KUALA LUMPUR: It's International Women's Day today and internationally renowned comedian Harith Iskander, together with several other celebrities are asking a very important question: Mana hero wanita kita? (Where is our female hero?)

In a comedy sketch released today, produced by Harith Iskander V Day Productions in collaboration with Mythos Labs, Harith and friends decided to highlight some unsung Malaysian female heroes.

"I feel women sometimes do not get the recognition they deserve and it is my personal hope that more stories and films about powerful, strong Malaysian women get produced,"Harith who directed the sketch posted on his Facebook page today.

Starring Sharifah Amani and Aeril Zafrel, among others, the sketch also features Malaysia's first female maritime ship captain Lieutenant Aida Arzahari.

The sketch opens with two characters played by comedians Farid Azmeir and Ahmad Zaidi Masri attempting to pitch a film plot to Sharifah Amani in which the female character is portrayed as a damsel in distress that needs a man to 'save' her.

A puzzled Sharifah Amani then tries to put forth a proposal for a plot that revolves around a strong and powerful woman who does not require saving.

She proposes the idea of Khatijah Sidek and Sybil Kathigasu, two prominent figures in the country's history as the main characters of a potential film.

The producers however keep trying to insert lead actor Aeril Zafrel into the plots, changing the concept that Sharifah Amani tries to put forth.

She then suggests they turn the story of Lieutenant Aida Arzahari into a movie as the maritime ship captain was also involved in Ops Daulat in Lahad Datu.

Describing the plot of this brief comedy sketch does not do it justice, which means you'll have to watch it for yourself and in the words of its director, "Share this link if you too believe women rule!"
