KUALA LUMPUR: Driven by the lack of job offers due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Hong Kong actress Kate Yeung has had to resort to working as a security guard at a university.
A nominee for Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Horse Awards and Hong Kong Film Awards for her role in 20 30 40, Yeung, 36, has been holding the security guard job since last year.
According to Hong Kong tabloid Apple Daily, Yeung said: "I'm really grateful for this past year. Because I entered this (entertainment) industry at the age of 16, I actually don't know much about the world outside of acting."
Before landing the security guard job, she tried her hands at being a florist, a wax maker, and even a waitress.
"When the pandemic became worse, I got scared and anxious. With my future in entertainment seemed bleak, I figured that I might as well get out of the house to find whatever work I can do.
"A good actor requires experience, so I have always had the idea to try working in different industries for the experience. But my capabilities and my time were limited, as I have only one body," she said.
Yeung added that these jobs helped her distract her from dwelling on the pandemic. She even made new friends from all walks of life along the way.
As such, she is sad to leave her work at the end of the month as she has recently been offered an acting role, with rehearsals set for next month.
