#Showbiz: 'Mat Kilau' collects mouth-watering RM90 million in 33 days

KUALA LUMPUR: The phenomenal success of local epic movie Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan continues as it has collected a whopping RM90 million in ticket sales after just 33 days of screenings in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.

Directed by Syamsul Yusof, the movie has already made history as the highest grossing local movie in Malaysia beating 2018's Munafik 2 and even Hollywood movie Avengers: End Game from 2019.

"It's all happening due to the will of God. Tears of gratitude, no words other than praise be to God.

"The whole production team and I are extremely moved by the latest accomplishment. It's surprising that the work continues to be the No.1 movie on the weekly box office chart for five consecutive weeks pushing aside big Hollywood movies," he said in a news report today.

Syamsul expressed his utmost gratitude for the support of the audience which had motivated him to do better in the future and added that this would signal a better future for local productions.

"It's been proven several times now that Malay movies have the ability to stand tall on local soil.

"This is the new hope for local cinema and for all local arts practitioners. Come all filmmakers, let's unite to further advance the Malaysian arts industry," he said.

Since its release on June 23, the movie, produced by Studio Kembara Sdn Bhd and starring Datuk Adi Putra as the titular hero, has continued to garner solid viewership with many cinema outlets registering full occupancy of its halls.

"Cinemas would usually screen a movie for as long as there are viewers. Movie screenings tend to drop eventually. But so far, there are still over five time slots at each cinema for Mat Kilau.

"There are certain really well-received movies that enjoy a screen run of up to two months," he said.
