#Showbiz: 'Mat Kilau' to screen in over 200 cinemas in Indonesia

KUALA LUMPUR: The record-breaking local epic movie Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan is set to be screened in over 200 cinemas in Indonesia beginning Aug 31.

In recent entries on social media, its director Syamsul Yusof shared an image of a poster of the movie for the Indonesian market.

He also shared a video clip of the gala screening in Jakarta on Friday, which was attended by the ensemble cast.

According to Harian Metro, the movie's producer, Studio Kembara, had already made plans to screen the sensational movie in the neighbouring republic since July.

"We had already made plans and preparations to bring the movie there to be screened since last month.

"After much discussion, it was decided that Aug 31 would be the premiere date for screenings at 200-plus cinemas.

"Our hope is that the messages that we have intended to channel through the movie will be well accepted," said Studio Kembara managing director Abdul Rahman Mt Dali.

"As for the tremendous reception we have received in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, we just hope that it will be the same there as well.

"This movie is not just a source of entertainment but has a meaningful message. For me, that is important. And of course, the next would be for it to translate to box office collections," he said.

Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan which has already collected close to RM100 million after screenings in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, is now the highest grossing local movie in Malaysia, beating 2018's Munafik 2 and even Hollywood movie Avengers: End Game from 2019.

Made at a cost of RM8 million, the movie is loosely based on the historical figure who fought the British colonialists in Pahang during the 1880s.

It stars Datuk Adi Putra, Datuk Jalaludin Hassan, Fattah Amin, Beto Kusyairy, Johan Asa'ri, Khir Rahman, Yayan Ruhian, Datuk Rahim Razali, Nam Ron and Wan Hanafi Su.

Closer to home, Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan is also set to greet viewers at home when it begins streaming on Netflix on Sept 16 which is Malaysia Day.
