#Showbiz: MPO kicks off 2023 Season with New Year's Concert this Saturday

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is set to entertain music lovers with its first show of 2023 in a New Year's Concert at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) in KLCC here on Jan 14.

The kick-off concert for its 2023 Season will also be part of the orchestra's 25th anniversary celebrations.

To be led by Resident Conductor Gerard Salonga, the concert will open and close with vibrant overtures such as Shostakovich's musical brilliance Festive Overture and Berlioz's frenetic bustle Roman Carnival.

In between, the MPO will enthral its audience with, among others, Hisaishi's swirling waltz taken from a 2004 Japanese animated fantasy film, Howl's Moving Castle.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel Waltz will also be included in the evening's enticing programme.

The piece was taken from a smashing Broadway musical titled Carousel which opened in New York in 1945 and ran for 890 performances.

Adding to the festive mood are Khachaturian's exhilarating dance music Masquerade Suite and Strauss' most famous operetta Die Fledermaus, with its irresistible tunes and irrepressible charm of Old Vienna.

The programme then takes a twist with Monti's slow and melancholic Csárdás.

The MPO will also present light classics Fiddle Faddle and Belle of the Ball composed by Anderson, Dvorak's carefree Eighth Symphony and Massenet's Thaïs Meditation, from a wildly successful opera in Paris in 1894 which contains an instrumental 'sung' by a solo violin.

Tickets to the New Year's Concert this Saturday which begins at 8.30pm are priced from RM168 to RM358.
