Fly FM trio opens up about radio DJ journey

FLY FM listeners who want to start their mornings right can count on 'The JoKeRs' – Juanita, Kavin Jay and Ryan Howlette – to bring good laughs and positive energy.

The breakfast show hosts recently spoke to the New Straits Times and shared their journey towards becoming radio personalities, including little known facts about the job.

MEET JUANITA

Juanita had wanted to be a radio DJ since she was 16.

"I was listening to Fly FM, and it was Jules at the time. I remember thinking how cool it would be to have a job where you are encouraged to be yourself," said Juanita.

She has been in the industry for 11 years, and calls radio her first love.

Juanita described her first day on the job as chaotic.

"For some reason, the system messed up at that time. When we called a guest on the show, everything said to him on the phone that was off mic went on air.

"We had to move stations to another backup studio to do the show. It was quite chaotic, but it was a good first day story," she said.

MEET KAVIN

Kavin made a name for himself as an established comedian before stepping into radio.

"I do not think I ever wanted to become a radio DJ," he told the New Straits Times.

However, he changed his mind after he got a taste of the radio environment.

Kavin's first experience on air came during a two-hour slot at 2am.

"At first, I was trying to be a little prim and proper.

"That only lasted for an hour. By the second hour, I kind of let loose and just had fun," he revealed.

MEET RYAN

Ryan gained popularity by creating entertaining content as a mat salleh living in Malaysia.

His radio DJ journey was less of an ambition, but more of something that fell into place.

"The last five years, I have just sort of fallen into opportunities, but it was definitely not what I was expecting at all," he reflected.

Ryan shared how different it is being on radio compared to creating videos.

"I was going from a place of making content where you can see exactly what people are commenting, to radio, where you say something and have no idea how it is received.

"I would say something and then be like, 'Okay, can I say that?'," he shared.

THE JOKERS

Juanita, Kavin and Ryan make up "The JoKeRs in the Morning" show on Fly FM.

In fact, their initials are a cool nod to the show's name.

Listeners have noticed the trio has a good-friends-just-hanging-out vibe, and that is what the show hopes to continue doing.

"I feel like there isn't really a show that has a dynamic like we do – three very different people who are able to talk and converse with each other in a way that people can relate to," said Ryan.

Tune in to Fly FM every weekday from 6am to 10am to catch 'The JoKeRs'.
