#Showbiz: Najwa admits she is not cut out for politics

KUALA LUMPUR: Her father Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin may have been Prime Minister for a year from 2020 to 2021 but singer-songwriter Najwa Mahiaddin or NJWA admits she is not cut out for politics.

"My father may be a prominent politician and I'm always proud of him, but I don't think I'm one to follow his footsteps because my passion lies in music," said Najwa at the press preview of horror film Rahsia at Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) Mid Valley Megamall on Tuesday.

Najwa added that her father never pressured her to enter politics as he knew that music was her "true calling".

On another note, the 37-year-old music graduate from Berklee College of Music in the United States revealed that she was currently slowing down her musical career to concentrate on motherhood.

Najwa and her husband of eight years Idris Koh have a two-year-old daughter Kaleela Idris.

"We don't have a housemaid and look after Kaleela by ourselves. Nothing beats being a hands-on parent for it helps us bond with her better," she said.

Najwa added that her daughter was born during the Covid-19 pandemic, when all outdoor concerts and showcases were scrapped.

"That period made me a full-time mum, and now that showcases and concerts are back, I'm doing my best to balance work and motherhood."

Najwa is currently promoting the theme song of Rahsia titled Alunan Lara which she wrote and composed specially for the horror film which opens in cinemas on Aug 10.

Rahsia, directed by Shamyl Othman and starring Nabila Huda Suhaimi is a remake of the award-winning 1987 film of the same name which was directed by Shamyl's father Othman Hafsham and which starred Noor Kumalasari.
