#Showbiz: M. Nasir is songwriter with highest earnings at MACP 2023 awards [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular music maestro Datuk M. Nasir was named Songwriter with the Highest Earnings by the Music Authors' Copyright Protection (MACP) during its Anugerah MACP 2023 event at The Intercontinental Hotel in Jalan Ampang here tonight.

The 66-year-old icon dubbed the Sifu of Malaysian music has written and composed songs for an impressive string of artistes such as The Alleycats, Search, Wings, and Datuk Jamal Abdillah.

"Thank you very much MACP and fans for your support," said Nasir, who is also a successful solo artiste and actor.

The Song with the Highest Earnings Overseas went to Ke Zai Wo Xin Di De Ming Zi performed by Crowd Lu and written and composed by Chen Wen Hua, Xu Yuan Ting and Jia Wang.

The Highest Earning Local Publisher title went to Nasir's Luncai Emas Sdn Bhd, and Universal Music Publishing Sdn Bhd was named Highest Earning Publisher.

"Cinta Pandang Pertama" singer Reedzwann received the Young Composer with Potential Award.

Stay Away, sung, composed and written by Zhe Kamil and Guccimith was named English Song with Most Performances, while the Malay Song with Most Performances went to Tiara performed by Kris and written and composed by Nasir.

The late legendary rock composer and lyricist JS Kevin (Zul Adnan Mohd Razali) received the Nadi Cipta award.

Other Anugerah MACP 2022 category winners included the Chinese Song with Most Performances (A La Si Jia Hai Wan by Firdhaus), Tamil Song with Most Performances (Perak Kulle by Krish K), Foreign Song with Most Performances (Cinta Sampai Mati by Kangen Band) and Best TikTok Composer (Aepul Roza).

MACP Berhad chairman Nasir said: "We have collected a record RM80 million in royalties over the year. It is an achievement all of us can be proud of."

He added: "These MACP awards are presented to honour and inspire lyricists and composers in the country to work without discouragement.

"We hope that these awards will be a stepping stone for all authors to produce a wide variety of high quality compositions in accordance with modern market demands."

Nasir also called on lyricists and composers to master the latest developments in information technology to take their music to the next level.

He also urged the government to consider extending the period of music copyright protection beyond the current 50 years.

Hosted by radio announcer Radin Amir Affendy, Anugerah MACP 2023 Night was organised to recognise and acknowledge the creative personnel who contribute to the development of the local music industry.

The guests were entertained by singers Banyak Bunyik Republik, Marsha Milan Londoh, Yise Loo, Keshvini Saravanan, Hazama Azmi and Liza Aziz among others.

MACP was established in 1989 as a non-profit collective management organisation to govern the public performance and broadcasting rights of its members, who include songwriters, composers and music producers.

It currently has over 5,000 members.
