KUALA LUMPUR: Award-winning Malaysian film 'Abang Adik', stormed the Taiwanese box office, amassing a staggering NTD40 million (RM5.95 million) within just 10 days since its premiere on December 1.
According to its director Jin Ong, the movie dominated the top spot in the country's box office during its opening weekend, collecting NTD15 million (RM2.22 million), making it the highest-grossing release from Malaysia and Singapore to captivate audiences there.
Speaking at the media screening held in Petaling Jaya today, Ong highlighted the film's international acclaim, including accolades received at prestigious film festivals like the Taipei 60th Golden Horse Award.
"The recognition and awards garnered worldwide for 'Abang Adik' signify the competitive prowess of the Asian film industry," said Ong. He praised the creative synergy between the main cast, Wu Kang-ren and Jack Tan, in portraying the poignant themes of life, family, sacrifice, and love.
"I sincerely hope that this film (which tells the tragic life of two stateless orphaned brothers) will receive similar positive response from Malaysian moviegoers when it opens in cinemas this Thursday," added Ong.
Taiwanese Wu, 41, plays the deaf-mute older brother, while the 32-year-old Malaysian singer-turned-actor Tan plays the younger brother in the 114-minute film produced by More Entertainment Sdn Bhd.
Others in the cast include Tan Kim Wang, Serene Lim, April Chan, and Bront Palarae.
