#SHOWBIZ: Phua Chu Kang returns to the stage in October

KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore's iconic funnyman Phua Chu Kang is back in action, and will tickle Malaysian comedy fans on Oct 24 and 25.

The character who is portrayed by comedian Gurmit Singh rocketed to regional fame in his very own sitcom Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd with 167 episodes over eight seasons from 1997 to 2007.

Fans of Phua, better known as PCK, always remember him as the awkward yet confident Singaporean contractor with curly hair, a prominent mole, yellow rubber boots and a strong command of Singlish.

They are also familiar with his famous lines "Don't Play Play" (sounding like "Don't Pray Pray") and "Best in Singapore, JB and some say Batam".

Phua's return to the big stage is theme Phua Chu Kang: The Greatest Show Man and takes place at 8pm on both days at HGH Convention Centre, Jalan Sentul here and is presented by Popcorn Studio Sdn Bhd.

Popcorn Studio representative Erik Ong said in a statement yesterday that fans of Phua will be entertained over two nights by Gurmit's extraordinary talents.

"When we say effortless, it doesn't mean Phua Chu Kang: The Greatest Show Man will be held without thorough preparation.

"Rest assured, the show will make its own mark when staged in Kuala Lumpur."

He added: "The plot and performance will surely be worthwhile for the audience.

"Interactive segments will occur, and the audience will get involved too!"

Gurmit, 59, said that the show will be a great opportunity to meet his Malaysian fans after a long time.

"I can't wait to return with something fresh but still carrying the classic Phua Chu Kang aura.

"How this performance will unfold and what will happen, come and you will get an unexpected show."

Singer and songwriter Russell Curtis will also mesmerise fans with his original compositions in folk and pop.

There will also be stand-up comedian Rizal Van Geyzel representing Malaysia and sharing with comedy lovers his latest, laugh-out-loud jokes.
