#SHOWBIZ: Zainal's goal to educate through performances

VETERAN singer Datuk Zainalabidin, 65, is set to perform for free at the Malaysian Drums & Percussion Festival, held at the Seri Budiman Concert Hall, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam, on Dec 7.

His decision to waive his fee is part of his commitment to educating the community about the value of the arts.

"I will perform without payment to emphasise the importance of art and education," Zainal shared with 'Harian Metro'.

"This isn't the first time. I've done this before, especially for educational events. I want students to understand the significance of art."

Known for his evergreen hit 'Hijau', Zainal believes that education is crucial in guiding musicians onto the right path.

"Many young Malays are talented, but lack direction. Higher education is costly, and without financial means, many can't pursue it," he said.

Zainal, who will perform three songs at the festival, urges aspiring musicians to prioritise their education.

"Too many talented musicians don't have an academic background. I encourage them to pursue higher education – whether a bachelor's degree, master's degree, or even a PhD in music. This can lead to a successful career in music."

He also cautioned against overconfidence.

"Playing a few chords and calling yourself a composer isn't enough. It takes more than luck to succeed in this industry."

The Malaysian Drums & Percussion Festival will also feature prominent artistes and musicians, including Arthur Kam, Batteryheadz Percussion, Kamrul Hussin, Lola of XPDC, Pa'ang Zaman, Rie Tsuji, Sān Percussion, Steve Thornton, The Gong, Ujang of Exists, and the Royal Malaysian Police Band alongside the Traditional Malaysian Orchestra (OTM).
