#SHOWBIZ: 'Venom' gets wayang kulit treatment in epic cross-cultural collaboration

KUALA LUMPUR: Following the Venom x Batik Inspired Art Series collaboration in celebration of the movie release of Venom: The Last Dance, Sony Pictures Malaysia has highlighted another Malaysian traditional art form.

This fusion of pop culture and local heritage continues through a partnership with Fusion Wayang Kulit, which merges the iconic Marvel anti-hero Venom with Malaysia's traditional shadow puppetry.

This unique project blends the dark, edgy persona of Venom with the rich cultural heritage of wayang kulit, a centuries-old art form, in a fusion of modern and traditional storytelling.

Fusion Wayang Kulit founder, Tintoy Chuo, leads this creative venture alongside Kelantan's renowned master puppeteer, Pak Dain.

Together, they have reimagined Venom within the intricate world of wayang kulit, crafting a mesmerising blend of superhero aesthetics and traditional craftsmanship.

The collaboration took off when Sony Pictures Malaysia approached Fusion Wayang Kulit to incorporate Venom into Malaysia's ancient storytelling tradition.

Over two months, both teams worked closely to respect the cultural significance of wayang kulit while embracing Venom's iconic image.

The result is a one-of-a-kind adaptation that will be showcased through both digital and live performances.

Fans can watch a 60-second video recreating a scene from the upcoming Venom: The Last Dance trailer, along with behind-the-scenes footage highlighting the puppet-making process with Chuo and Pak Dain.

"We are thrilled to break new ground by merging Hollywood's superhero genre with the authentic spirit of Malaysian traditional art," said Sony Pictures Malaysia marketing director, Catherine Chai, in a recent statement.

Tintoy Chuo also shared his excitement: "This collaboration gives us a chance to elevate Malaysia's cultural heritage on a global stage by blending it with one of the world's most famous anti-heroes."

Venom: The Last Dance opens in cinemas tomorrow (Oct 24).

Tom Hardy returns as Venom in this final chapter, with a star-studded cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, and Rhys Ifans.
