CHARACTERS that draw viewers in and intriguing and unique scripts are vital for a film's success, said industry experts.
They recently shared ideas to guide aspiring filmmakers in crafting compelling scripts.
The National Film Development Corporation (Finas) organised a forum, "What Is A Sound & Solid Film Package For The Market From The Perspective Of Top Malaysian Movers And Shakers?"
The forum was held during the One Step Closer: Special Film Idea Development Workshop.
The event included industry leaders discussing elements that scriptwriters should consider, from character development to a story's message.
CHARACTERS AND STORYLINES
Media Prima Television Networks (MPTN) and Primeworks Studios chief executive officer Nini Yusof highlighted the importance of creating characters that capture audience interest.
"When reading a script, I assess whether the characters have the potential to attract attention, as this significantly impacts marketing."
She said this at the forum held at Menara MyIPO in Kuala Lumpur.
"I also consider if the storyline has potential for sequels, which can help in building a franchise."
Nini added that while commercial viability is often prioritised, scripts meant for festivals or presenting a unique perspective should still resonate with audiences.
PURPOSE IN SCRIPTWRITING
Astro Shaw & Nusantara Malay business head and vice-president Raja Jastina Raja Arshad encouraged aspiring scriptwriters to focus on the core message of their work.
"When reviewing a script, I look for a clear purpose and a message that stands out.
"It's crucial to address social issues or offer fresh perspectives while ensuring the content appeals to the target audience."
Raja Jastina said a good script should be innovative and meaningful, with a strong focus on the intended viewer demographic.
STRONG PRODUCTION TEAM
Skop Productions executive producer Shamin Yusof underscored the importance of a cohesive production team.
"Besides a solid storyline and well-crafted characters, a dedicated team is essential," Shamin said.
"Making a good movie is about teamwork. Every aspect, from storyline to casting, contributes to creating a successful film."
SUPPORTING SCRIPTWRITERS
The workshop concluded with a ceremony led by Finas CEO Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, highlighting Finas' commitment to nurturing the film industry through programmes like this.
Designed as a four-day intensive session, the One Step Closer programme aimed to strengthen participants' skills and prepare their ideas for domestic and international markets.
Participants engaged with industry veterans, including directors like Khabir Bhatia, Danny Chong and Putri Purnama Sugua.
Participants joined another forum, titled "Unpacking the Journey of Script Development Through The Lens of Prolific Malaysian Directors," which provided insights into the steps in script development from the perspective of experienced directors.
Aspiring filmmakers were encouraged to seek the 2024 Creative Content Fund to support script development.
