AFTER more than a year of lockdowns and being glued to our devices, screen time has definitely increased for the average Malaysian and this will ultimately affect eyesight.
Myopia, commonly referred to as near-sightedness, is the most common vision disorder among children and young adults.
The prevalence of myopia and high myopia is increasing globally at an alarming rate, with significant increases in the risks for vision impairment from pathologic conditions associated with high myopia, including retinal damage, cataract and glaucoma.
According to a study conducted by the World Health Organisation, about one third of the world's population or 1.4 billion people are myopic.
"This sharp rise in myopia has been linked to an increase in near visual work, specifically computers, phones, and tablets. When left untreated, myopia increases the risk of serious eye disorders such as retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataracts, while high myopia can cause serious retinal damage that can lead to blindness," says ophthalmologist Dr Sangeetha Tharmathurai.
It is estimated that by 2050, half of the world's population could be affected by myopia.
New research from Flinders University has also found that people with near-sightedness or myopia are more likely to experience poor quality sleep.
They have more delayed circadian rhythms and lower production of melatonin, a hormone secreted in the brain which is responsible for regulating sleep at night.
With the ongoing digital age and the prolonged exposure to blue light, disruptions in circadian rhythms and our sleep cycle are becoming an increasingly recognised health concern.
Additionally, improper lighting can cause eye strain, headaches, blurry vision, or dry eyes which further exacerbate any vision problems users might face.
Given our increased exposure to artificial lighting, Signify seeks to provide innovative lighting solutions to ensure better vision as we go about our daily tasks.
Signify's WiZ range provides users with a convenient way to control the lights around them and the key to regulate their circadian rhythms for better quality sleep through the certified EyeComfort feature.
Some of the benefits of EyeComfort include minimising flicker and glare that may irritate eyes, provide natural colour rendering and even light distribution that can increase the quality of colour in the user's surroundings.
"These days, everyone is always on their screens as it provides functionality and convenience for work or play. With the introduction of our innovative WiZ Smart Lighting range, we want to ensure that our users have ease of access and control of their lighting through a proper interface. Our WiZ lightbulbs adhere to strict criteria for visual comfort," says Signify Malaysia (formerly Philips Lighting) commercial leader (consumer), Esmond Tsang.
An easy to setup device, users only need to set up their bluetooth and existing WiFi network to enjoy the different modes to brighten their lives. Through the WiZ App, users can easily set the perfect light to study, create a cozy setting by mimicking a fireplace or candlelight, and automate and synchronise lights with daily activities or schedule lights to smoothly wake you up or support your bedtime routine.
