THE death of a 29 year old woman following a breast augmentation procedure conducted by a non-medical individual in Skudai, Johor, underscores not only the importance of strict regulations but also the need for better public awareness regarding aesthetic treatments in Malaysia.
Malaysian Society of Aesthetic Medicine president Dr Masilamoney Asirvatham says in recent years, the demand for aesthetic and cosmetic treatments has shown an exponential rise.
"While Malaysia boasts numerous certified and highly skilled medical professionals in this arena, it is distressing to note the escalating number of unauthorised and unqualified individuals offering such services and capitalising on this trend," he says.
It is this unrestricted growth, combined with a lack of public understanding and awareness, that can result in tragedy.
Dr Masilamoney urges the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, city councils and other relevant authorities to intensify regulations related to this issue and establish clearer guidelines for those wishing to offer cosmetic and aesthetic treatments in the country.
Medical aesthetic procedures can only be performed by registered medical practitioners at registered or licensed premises in accordance with the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998 and Aesthetic Medical Practice Guidelines 2013.
The allure of aesthetic enhancements should never eclipse health, safety and life, he says
The recent case clearly highlights the potential dangers of seeking aesthetic treatments from non-qualified individuals.
Dr Masilamoney says the public, on their part, must do thorough research before undergoing any medical aesthetic procedure.
It is vital to :

This checklist can be obtained at https://meritsmmc.moh.gov.my/search and https://www.moh.gov.my/index.php/pages/view/2118 respectively.
* Understand Potential Risks
Every medical procedure, however minor, carries risks. Engage in a comprehensive discussion with the registered medical doctor about possible complications and outcomes.
*Undergo the procedure only at registered / licensed premises
