SUNGAI PETANI: A stall selling grilled chicken rice for only RM1 has drawn a steady flow of customers after news of its delicious pricing went viral.
In business for just two weeks, the stall located near Bedong here is helmed by single mother Surayani Mohd Nasir, 39, who operates daily from 10am until 5pm.
The mother of three said she decided to introduce the dish at a very affordable price as she understood the burden faced by other low-income earners like her.
“As a single mother I understand the predicament that low-income earners face to support their families.
“I used to sell sate at 30 sen per stick and I have passed on the business to my eldest son who is waiting for his SPM results,” she said when met today.
The entrepreneurial lady said she uses about 100kg of rice and 100 chickens daily to meet her customers’ demands.
She added that the grilled chicken rice recipe belonged to her grandfather who has been selling the dish at the night markets here since 1992.
Surayani said she was surprised that the simple dish has attracted many people to the extent that it has gone viral on social media.
She said although the price was cheap compared to normal chicken rice sold at other shops, she still focuses on the quality and cleanliness aspect in preparing the food.
She reiterated that she is not worried if she makes less profit as long as the money earned can be used to raise her children.
According to Surayani, most of her customers are locals and travellers up north.
