DESPITE offering a variety of activities, especially for nature lovers and cultural explorers, Kuala Selangor is a destination that is frequently overlooked.
Charming and laidback, the district has something for everyone — from walking through nature parks and observing bioluminescent fireflies and beautiful Instagrammable places to tasting delicious local cuisine.
In fact, there are many hidden gems in the district that even Selangor residents are unaware of.
GO
The district's famous landmark is Masjid Raja Lumu, which stands on the site of the former Kuala Selangor Old Mosque at the foot of Bukit Malawati.
Known for its beautiful modern architecture, including copper domes, big archways, and stained glass windows, the mosque was inaugurated by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj as the ninth royal mosque in Selangor.
The name of this mosque was chosen in honour of the first sultan of Selangor, Sultan Salehuddin Shah.
An interesting place is Sasaran Art Beach, which is located in a small fishing village called Sasaran Village.
Organised by the Sasaran Art Association, the art gallery allows artists to display their talent, with the line-up for the recent mural project involving Bibichun, Sliz, Ng Kim Heoh and Jason Teo Jia Hao.
Still into beautiful things? Head to Laluan Seni Pekan Lama, an arts and cultural trail. It is filled with 15 heritage-based arts and murals on the walls of older buildings in the town, complete with a colourful path.
Some of the more prominent pieces are "Bunga Artistik" by artists Izwan Rahimi, Fendi Rosli and Andi Syafie, as well as "Lombong Bijih Timah" by CO2 Mural.
Artists with diverse backgrounds, such as Fendigua, Husna Helmee and Loque, also contributed to the creation of the unique and beautiful murals.
DO
Birdies should not miss the chance to check out Taman Alam Kuala Selangor, a nature park home to a myriad flora and fauna, including rare species of birds and butterflies.
There are 156 species of birds, 57 of which are migratory from Siberia and Russia. The best time to visit is between September and April, when this park becomes a bird migration point.
Some of the local bird species are stork, mangrove blue flycatcher, kingfisher, and black eagle, while the migratory birds consist of purple heron, great eagle, tiger shrike, northern shrike, and more!
Another unique experience Kuala Selangor has is courtesy of a huge colony of fireflies that calls the mangrove areas in Kampung Kuantan home.
Going on a firefly cruise at dusk is the district's must-do activity.
The cruise is usually via a traditional, unmotorised boat so that the fireflies are spared the noise pollution.
Visitors coming with young children should visit Husin Fauzi Farm, which has more than 40 species of animals and offers a range of activities for children and families to enjoy.
The farm has a petting zoo that lets visitors interact with animals, including ponies, cows, goats and rabbits.
Children can also go horseback riding and participate in animal feeding.
In addition to these activities, the farm offers archery as a fun and exciting activity for visitors.
EAT
The district is a foodie haven too. There is a diverse range of local and international dishes that are not limited to fresh, cheap seafood that food lovers have been raving about.
One of the must try is Kinnaree Thai Restaurant, a pork-free restaurant that serves delicious Thai cuisine and is located near the beautiful Sungai Selangor.
It offers a range of dishes, including traditional Thai favourites, vegetarian options and can accommodate special dietary needs.
For an authentic local flavour, try out one of Selangor's heritage dish, Nasi Ambeng at Warung Ibu Nasi Ambeng.
Serving authentic Javanese cuisine, this restaurant specialises in making nasi ambeng, a dish that consists of rice, chicken, fried noodles, stir-fried tempeh, and tofu, all made in different recipes for variations of side dishes.
For another traditional cuisine, head to Warung Ketupat Kampung Permatang which serves a delicious traditional Malay dish called ketupat that goes best with kuah lodeh or peanut gravy!
