Pulau Songsong: Diamond in the rough

Pulau Songsong, a hidden gem off Pantai Murni in Kedah, offers the perfect getaway to those seeking tranquillity or adventure, writes Ahmad Mukhsein Mukhtar

WHEN it comes to islands in Kedah, most people would immediately think of Langkawi. However, Kedah is also home to other hidden gems lying off its shores, which are waiting to be discovered. One such gem is Pulau Songsong, a serene island nestled off the coast of Yan, Kedah.

Pulau Songsong is one of the four enchanting islands that dot the Jerai Geopark. The others are Pulau Bunting, Pulau Bidan and Pulau Telor. Pulau Songsong stands out as the most popular and happening destination as it has more amenities for holidaymakers.

Its diverse landscape offers the perfect backdrop for a wide range of activities, making it a favourite for adventurers and nature-lovers.

With its pristine beaches and serene landscapes, this island is truly a hidden gem that promises an unforgettable weekend retreat.

Picture yourself walking along its untouched beaches, with waves gently caressing the sandy shores. For anglers, there is the possible thrill of reeling in groupers as long as 61cm. The unspoiled atmosphere is sure to invite you to linger a little longer.

WELL-GUARDED SECRET

Once a restricted navy training site, Pulau Songsong was opened to tourists in 2016.

However, until today, it is still not very well known and its location is quite secluded from big cities like GeorgeTown, Penang, and Kuala Lumpur. Therefore, it lacks the bustling crowd seen at all famous islands around the country.

This isolation has preserved its natural allure, making it a perfect sanctuary for those seeking a brief escape from the nearby town of Yan.

The island's limited infrastructure only adds to its charm, providing a tranquil setting for picnics and beachside fun. For a more immersive experience, tour operator Mohd Rusydan Abdullah offers comprehensive packages that include snorkelling among vibrant coral reefs, as well as access to picturesque camping sites. The island's true highlight, he shares enthusiastically, lies beneath the surface.

In collaboration with non-governmental organisation Reef Care, which is working to conserve the reefs around Pulau Songsong, Rusydan and his team have worked diligently to rejuvenate the island's marine ecosystem.

"The island remains largely untouched," he explains during a recent media engagement session with the National Culture and Arts Department.

He adds: "Though navy training operations had affected some coral reefs, we meticulously restored them through the installation of artificial structures, fostering diverse marine life that has become a sight to behold when snorkelling."

For an affordable price of RM70, visitors can rent tents and hammocks, allowing them to fully embrace the island's natural beauty. Titi Nguyen, a Vietnamese tourist, praised the island's potential, noting its proximity to the mainland and its stunning coral reefs.

"It's a hidden treasure," enthuses the 30-year-old, before adding: "The island's charm, combined with its accessibility and the quality of the coral reefs, make it worth the trip. I paid RM350 for a two-way trip for 12 people. For those seeking an unspoiled adventure away from commercialised destinations, this island is perfect."

HUGE POTENTIAL

However, like any undiscovered jewel, Pulau Songsong still has much room for improvement. Civil servant Nasriah Redzuan says the island needs better infrastructure for tourists, particularly toilets and restrooms.

The 28-year-old says: "The views are definitely breathtaking and the water is clean. It's certainly the perfect place for family outings and camping. But more facilities are needed to do justice to its charms."

Meanwhile, Kedah National Culture and Arts Department director Sabariah Masadi expressed enthusiasm on the island's potential. "Pulau Songsong may not be widely known, but it has the potential to become a premier quick getaway for those looking to unwind.

"Our goal is to shine a light on its unique attractions and promote its cultural and tourism value."

During the media session, participants from various news agencies and the National Culture and Arts Department staff members joined each other in activities designed to foster camaraderie while exploring the island's history and attractions.

This event, which also highlighted the island's history in addition to its attractions, is also aligned with the state's upcoming Visit Kedah 2025 campaign, aimed at introducing Pulau Songsong to a broader audience and highlight its potential as a must-visit destination.
