40 undergrads trade classrooms for Pulau Tuba to learn more of the fishing community

LANGKAWI: Forty undergraduates were given the opportunity to delve into the culture and daily routine of the fishing community in Pulau Tuba here.

Throughout the week-long programme, which began today, the students will be living with their foster families in Desa Keda Teluk Berembang.

Albukhary International University (AIU) student Muhammad Taqiuddin Mohd Bakhri, 24, said he was excited about living with the fishing community on the island.

"I look forward to getting involved in their daily routine as fishermen and to understand the challenges that they face.

"This is something that we don't get to experience in the classroom, so I am excited to blend in," he said.

Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) student Aifaa Najihah Amir Wardi, 20, said she was thrilled to be able to work with the fishing community and delve into their lifestyle.

"This is a good opportunity to better understand the challenges faced by the local community in Pulau Tuba.

"There is a lot of knowledge to pick up from this programme and I am excited about it," said the Computer Science student.

The participants were flagged off by Langkawi District Officer Mohamad Subhi Abdullah at his office here today. Kuah assemblyman Amar Pared Mahamud was also present.

Subhi said the 40 students were part of the 500 undergraduates in the state who were participating in the Program Baktisiswa Perdana organised by the state government in all 13 state constituencies in Kedah.
