MG returns with EVs priced below RM160,000

KUALA LUMPUR: Morris Garage (MG) officially returns to Malaysia in two models: the MG ZS EV and MG4. 

SAIC Motor Malaysia Sdn Bhd (SAIC) managing director Steven Du said both models will be enticing proposition for Malaysians seeking affordable EV without compromise. 

"The eagerly anticipated MG4 EV hatchback promises to shatter expectations, offering Malaysians an exhilarating journey into zero-emissions motoring. 

"The MG ZS EV sports utility vehicle (SUV) on the other hand embodies practicality, innovation and comfort, all seamlessly fused into one extraordinary package," he added. 

The MG4 will consist of four specifications at launch: the MG4 Standard, MG4 Lux, Lux Extended Range, and the powerful MG4 XPower. 

All four are priced at RM103,999, RM128,999, RM 148,999 and RM158,999 respectively. 

Its' battery capacities are available from 51kWh to 77kWh with a capable range between 350km to 520km (WLTP cycle). 

Seven colours are available: Volcano Orange, Holborn Blue, Dynamic Red, Arctic White, Camden Grey, Black Pearl, Monument Silver, and an exclusive matte option of Racing Green for the MG4 XPower. 

Additionally, the MG4 Lux and Extended Range are available with a two-tone black roof.

The B-segment MG ZS EV sports utility vehicle (SUV) on the otherhand is available from RM125,999.

It is equipped with a 51.1kWh Li-Ion battery,  which offers a range of 320km. (WLTP cycle).

The model boasts a maximum output of 130kW (176PS) power and 280Nm of torque, while accelerating 0-100 kph in 8 seconds. 

The models are imported (CBU) from China as MG's Thailand factory does not produce EVs and only of specific models. 

Four colours will be available namely the Dynamic Red, Arctic White, Black Pearl and Monument Silver.

Both models come with a comprehensive warranty package, including 7 years or 150,000km (whichever comes first) on the vehicle and 8 years or 180,000km (whichever comes first) on the battery.

Delivery is expected to be immediate in accordance to the first wave of booking made with 200 units having arrived and another 200 are on the way - so far booking consists of 90 per cent of MG4 and 10 per cent being the MG ZS. 

Currently there is no time frame when local assembly (CKD) and localisation will take place despite plans to do so. 

Those who register for the vehicles before April 30 are entitled to an exclusive buyer's package which includes a free wallbox charger with installation - 7kW worth RM4, 600 for MG ZS EV and MG4 Standard models, and 11kW at RM5,200 for the MG4 Lux - and free 1,000 charging credits with DC Handal and Jom Charge for the MG4 Lux Extended Range and XPOWER models. 

SAIC Malaysia also introduced an MG insurance programme in partnership with Berjays Sompo Insurance, Allianz Malaysia and General Malaysia to provide additional EV protection which includes unlimited towing cost coverage and up to RM1,000 reimbursement through a home wallbox charger coverage. 

SAIC Malaysia is looking to set up 25 MG dealerships by Q3 this year, with 8 of them up and running by the end of this month. 

The company is also looking to bring in MG's internal combustion engine (ICE) models sometime later this year. 

The popular MG Cyberster model is also slated to make its local debut in Q3 this year in tendem with the availability of the model in the United Kingdom - applying right-hand readiness setup for both markets in one go.
