KUALA LUMPUR: The police’s new Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (ISCD) has vowed to go all out to eradicate corruption within the force.
Speaking at the federal police headquarters here after its launch yesterday, ISCD’s first director Senior Deputy Commissioner Datuk Zubaidah Md Ismail said corruption was identified as the major problem that had caused the force to lose public confidence, alongside other disciplinary issues.
She said the time had come for stringent action against culprits who had cost the force its good image and the department had several strategies to do so.
“One of the problems faced by the police today is that there are many people who have lost confidence in us, in policing work.
“There are many factors that can lead to this problem, but the biggest issue we face today is the bad perception of the Royal Malaysian Police due to some irresponsible men who solicited bribes.
“This task is going to be a very challenging one for me, but I believe that through education and enforcement, together with cooperation from the men and women in this force, we can increase the police standard and integrity level,” said Zubaidah.
She also led a line of 70 officers who received promotions from Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
Zubaidah was previously the Management Department’s deputy director and held the rank of deputy commissioner.
She said the IGP, in establishing the new department, believed that the force had to mend their internal problems before they could gain people’s respect.
Among the methods that would be used by ISCD to ensure that police integrity was upheld was to maintain a thorough monitoring system as well as an effective complaint management drive.
She said the department would also deploy undercover personnel to monitor the discipline of policemen on the field, and they welcomed the public to come forward with complaints.
Earlier, Khalid launched a rebranded Crime Prevention Department, now known as the Crime Prevention and Community Security Department (CPCSD).
On the new departments, Khalid said ISCD would be responsible for ensuring discipline and compliance of standard operating procedures in the police ranks, while the CPCSD would play a proactive role in crime prevention by educating the public and engaging them for a better crime combating exercise.
