Rayer charged with sedition

GEORGE TOWN: Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer claimed trial to two counts of sedition at the Sessions Courts over his alleged “celaka Umno” remark three months ago.

The DAP state lawmaker was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 for both counts with an alternative charge for the second offence under Section 504 of the Penal Code.

He appeared before to Judge Zulhasmi Abdullah, who fixed bail at RM3,000 and Judge Zaharah Hussain, who fixed bail at RM2,000.

Both judges fixed Oct 17 for mention.

Rayer allegedly uttered the words the words at the state assembly sitting on May 20 and later repeated the remarks at a rally in Island Glades on May 22.

It was reported that a total of 14 police reports nationwide have been lodged against him over the remark.

On June 18, Rayer, who was arrested and later released on police bail, was told to turn up at Penang Sessions Court on June 19.

However, the Attorney-General decided not to proceed with the charge and postponed it indefinitely.

Rayer was represented by Ramkarpal Singh Deo, Gobind Singh Deo, and S. Raventharan, while State Prosecuting Unit chief Razali Che Ani prosecuted with Deputy Public Prosecutor Charanjit Singh assisting.

Rayer was accompanied by his parents, wife, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, several state executive councillors and fellow DAP members.
