KUALA LUMPUR: A 93-second video clip, believed to have been recorded by a Malaysian involved in the civil war in Syria, has gone viral on YouTube.
Entitled, ‘Siria - Mercenarios Asiáticos Combaten en las Filas Terroristas - 7’, it was downloaded on YouTube on June 7, and recorded by an individual who spoke in Bahasa Melayu with a northern accent.
The video also showed a tank on the way to the battlefield and a group of armed men in military fatigue on a truck.
“Yes, the tank is moving to its destination in the battlefield, Allahuakbar, Allahuakbar (God is Great, God is Great)...all love martyrs,” said the cameraman.
The video was detected while Malaysia was requesting the Syrian authorities to confirm allegations of Malaysian involvement in militant activities in the Middle East.
In a statement yesterday, the foreign ministry said Malaysia was against violence and extremism.
The statement also referred to allegations that 15 Malaysians who were involved in violence and jihad activities of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a breakaway group of Al-Qaeda were killed in Syria.
The allegations were reportedly made by a Syrian officer in New York at a media conference on June 18, who also alleged that apart from Malaysians, people from several Asean countries were also involved in such activities in Syria.
