Three injured in TNB substation explosion

KUALA LUMPUR: An explosion at a Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) power substation in Taman Seri Jati, Jalan Klang Lama here last night saw three of its employees seriously injured.

The victims Mohd Rozairi Ghazali, 30s, Mohd Zaidi Syarif, 35, and Norizan Abdullah , 58, were conducting maintenance work when the electrical explosion occurred about 10.45pm.

Bukit Jalil Fire and Rescue station chief Jalailudin Abdul Mubin said from initial report by firemen who responded to the scene, the victims each suffered an average of 80 per cent burns to their bodies and limbs.

"We received a call about the incident at 10.55pm, before a team of six firemen led by officer Fadzil Arshad was dispatched to the scene.

"Upon arrival, they found that three TNB workers were badly injured from electrical shock. There were burnt marks all over their bodies.

"The victims were rushed to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre in an ambulance, " he told reporters when met at the scene.

He said Fire and Rescue Department's Forensics Unit are investigating the cause of the incident.

The New Straits Times went to the scene and saw pieces of clothes, including those that resembled what used to be TNB's standard luminous vest, lying on the ground at the substation's compound.

Fire investigators and a team of TNB staff, led by an engineer, were also there. They were seen performing checks and taking pictures inside the substation.

Meanwhile, at the medical center, families and friends of the victims were seen gathering in front of its Emergency Department's entrance.

It is learnt that, as of 2am, doctors and medical staff at the hospital are still working to stabilise the victims' conditions.

From conversations between several TNB officers, believed to be the victims' superiors, it is learnt that at least one of the victims is undergoing emergency surgery.
