KUALA LUMPUR: Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM) targets RM10 million for food packs to feed the hungry in 31 countries in Asia, Middle East and Europe.
The non-governmental organisation launched their Ramadan: Care for Hunger campaign that will commence two weeks before Ramadan and will continue until the middle of the holy month.
IRM country director Ir. Zairulshahfuddin Zainal Abidin urged the public to donate by contributing early, before Ramadan arrives so that the beneficiaries can enjoy their meals beginning on the first day.
“The faster we raise the money, the faster we can distribute the food packs,” he said adding that the packs will be sent from door to door to those in need and who qualify.
He said the campaign last year had helped Muslims in Kosova, which consisted of 35 per cent in poverty and 50 per cent in extreme poverty.
Zairulshahfuddin said the food packs were categorised countries in four classes with prices ranging from RM130 to RM250 per family, adding that Malaysian beneficiaries would get RM130 worth food packs that were expected to last for three to four weeks.
Launched by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 2005, Zairulshahfuddin said the organisation was an international relief and development charity organisation consisting of 100 branches that provided humanitarian aid worldwide.
“Last year, 4,350 food packs were distributed to 15 different countries and we doubled the number we expected to feed and helped more beneficiaries,” Zairulshahfuddin said.
