Outstanding voter turnout at Rompin by-election: EC

KUALA ROMPIN: The Rompin by-election registered an outstanding voter turnout this morning, said Elections Commission director Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof.

"Up to 11am, 46 per cent of voters had cast their votes. This is an outstanding percentage," he said.

Speaking to reporters at Kolej Komuniti Rompin here, he said that the average percentage of voters turning up per hour so far was 15 per cent.

"Anything above 10 per cent is considered high," he said.

Abdul Aziz said a total of 24, 438 voters had cast their votes, the majority via channel 1 and 2, which is designated for seniors.

"The voters for channel 3,4,5 and 6 have yet to turn up. These are the youngsters. Perhaps they have not got out of bed yet," he said.

Abdul Aziz said the EC was hoping for a minimum turnout of 80 per cent in Rompin.

Meanwhile, Abdul Aziz expressed disappointment at the actions of supporters from both parties which had continued campaigning by the roadside outside polling centres until today.

"Campaigning ended at 12 midnight. I am disappointed, but what can we do - no matter what we say they are stubborn. I believe they are outsiders from both sides," he said.

Abdul Aziz said he hoped a police report would be made and action would be taken on the supporters.

"They face up to RM3000 in fines and a year’s jail if found guilty, but proving it in court is not easy," he said.
