Sultan Yahya Petra bridge, roads to be closed several hours on Thursday

KOTA BARU: The Sultan Yahya Petra bridge and several roads in the state capital will be closed for several hours on Thursday for the Royal Kelantan Walkathon, "Walk with Me 2015".

The Sultan of Kelantan Sultan Muhammad V will be among the 25,000 participants expected in the six-kilometre walk from the Stadium Sultan Mohamed IV to the bridge and return.

The secretary of the Al-Muhammadi Kelantan Royal Family Organisation (Pertubuhan Kerabat D'Raja Kelantan Al-Muhammadi), Datuk Dr. Tg. Mohamed Faziharudean Tg. Feissal said the roads including Jalan Hamzah and Jalan Sultan Ibrahim and the bridge would be closed in stages from 4.30 pm to 7 pm and the public was advised to make alternative arrangements.

"We expected a turnout of about 17,000 school children and 4,000 students from local higher institutions besides the public in the walkathon. Participants will not be charged entrance fee this year but they will be encouraged to donate to the Royal Kelantan Disaster Fund which was launched on May 1.

"The fund will assist victims of all disasters in the state and not only flood victims. It has collected RM1.07 million during its launching dinner held in Kuala Lumpur," he said.

Tg Faziharudean said a carnival would be also be held at the stadium on the same day and events lined up included an exhibition on the recent flood which would be put up by the state museum and a handicraft exhibition by the state Tourist Information Centre.

He said blind musicians, the Caliph Buskers, would also be performing at the site in the afternoon.

The walkathon has been organised by the organisation since 2011.
