Car veers off Kuantan bridge, killing woman and injuring husband

KUANTAN: A woman died and her husband was injured after their car crashed off a bridge and plunged into a river at Seberang Balok near here today.

The accident occurred around 10.30am. The victims, a retired couple from Jerantut, were travelling in a Proton Saga when the driver, 67-year-old Paridah Dollah, lost control of the vehicle while crossing the Balok Makmur bridge.

"The car went off the bridge and landed on its side in the river," said Kuantan police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu.

Paridah died at the scene, while her 66-year-old husband sustained breathing difficulties and is currently receiving treatment at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) emergency unit.

The case is investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for causing death due to reckless or dangerous driving.

Meanwhile, Pahang Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Zulfadli Zakaria said nine firemen from the Gebeng fire station arrived at the scene at 10.39am.

"Both victims were helped out of the car by members of the public. Firemen provided first aid to the male victim, who suffered breathing difficulties. The remains of the female victim were handed to the police," added Zulfadli.
