KUALA LUMPUR: Local child star Puteri Balqis is known for her roles that involve her crying onscreen but the award-winner is craving for a new challenge.
"Having to cry on cue is tough actually," the actress, 8, admitted when met at a press conference for HBO Asia Original’s upcoming fantasy-horror series Halfworlds, yesterday (Oct 21) at the Grand Hyatt here.
"Plus, everyone has seen me execute crying scenes one too many times. I’ve played a ghost before too.
She added: “I don’t want to be stereotyped and associated to a particular genre or role. I'd like to show everyone that I have more to offer."
The child star said that she dreams of portraying a psychotic character in the future, which is something she has never done before.
Last year, she has won the Best Actress award at both the Anugerah Skrin 2014 and the 19th Asian Television Awards for her portrayal in TV3’s tearjerker drama series Balqis.
The actress is a guest star in Halfworlds, which is directed by accomplished Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar, and is about a street artiste who is caught in a battle between humans and demons.
Balqis, who plays a blind orphan named Tari, said that she had rehearsed well before filming the episode in Batam, Indonesia so she didn't encounter any difficulties.
Working with HBO was one of the reasons she agreed to be part of Halfworlds. She added that the opportunity allowed her to gain more experience in acting.
"I had filmed a scene with (Indonesian actor) Alex Abbad, who is my idol. When I first saw him, I was immediately starstruck!"
Balqis only had four scenes to act in but she said it was an exciting experience and that she already missed working with the rest of the cast and crew.
The dark fantasy will premiere on Nov 29 at 10pm on HBO Asia and HBO HD Asia (Astro Channel 411 & 431). The first episode will also be available for free streaming on the Halfworlds Facebook page (www.facebook.com/HalfworldsHBO).
