'Lori Hantu' usage to be reviewed: Aziz Kaprawi

BATU PAHAT: The government will review the usage of 'lori hantu' or unlicensed lorries operating at construction sites because of the unclear regulations related to these type of vehicles.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said the usage of these lorries currently do not come under the jurisdiction of any department.

He said this posed a danger as there were no specific regulation on 'lori hantu' unlike machinery at construction sites, which are monitored under the Department of Occupational Safety and Health.

"The government will review the usage of 'lori hantu' at construction sites.

"After this, 'lori hantu' operating at private locations or construction sites have to be monitored by the government to ensure the vehicles are safe to use and do not endanger workers and the community," said Aziz after delivering a new year message to Sri Gading Umno division members at Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara, Parit Raja, near here.

The Road Transport Department has been instructed to conduct a nationwide enforcement and monitoring of 'lori hantu' which literally translates to ghost lorries.

Aziz said yesterday that the directive was issued following the case of one such lorry, which had been parked and rolled downhill before ramming into 37 vehicles in front of SMK Bandar Damai Perdana in Kajang, Selangor on Thursday, killing two students.
