Couple rescued by passers-by after car pinned under lorry

BAGAN SERAI: A couple cheated death when their vehicle was pinned under a lorry at Kilometre 181.2 of the North-South Expressway near here today.

In the 1.50pm incident, the driver K. Balasubramaniam, 51, only suffered minor injuries while his wife had a broken arm. Both were helped out of their car by passers-by.

Bagan Serai Fire and Rescue Department Operations chief Che Hassan Che Mat said they received a distress call at 1.54pm and dispatched two fire engines and eight firemen to the scene.

He said that when they arrived at the scene, they found the sedan wreckage under the lorry.

"Upon arrival, we were informed by the police that the victims had been extricated and sent to Parit Buntar Hospital.

"We helped clean the crash site and the operation was completed at 5.27pm ," he said.

The accident had caused a 3km-long traffic jam.

Kerian district police chief, Superindent Omar Bakhtiar Yaacob said the accident happened when the lorry driver lost control of his vehicle and swerved into the fast lane.
