Walk for Children charity walkathon held at Perdana Botanical Garden on Feb 13

KUALA LUMPUR: The International School of Kuala Lumpur(ISKL) will be organizing a walkathon on Feb 13 at the Perdana Botanical Gardens to raise funds for two homes underprivileged children.

The event, dubbed Walk for Children, ; A small step to improve the lives of children, is expected to draw 800 to 1,000 participants to raise RM80,000 for the homes, namely Shelter Home Malaysia and Tasputra Perkim.

The school’s International Club president Anne Wilson said the target was set based on walkathons which was organised by the society on three occasions from 2010 to 2012.

“We also selected the homes as they have not received grants to see them through the year,” she said, adding that all proceeds from the registration of the event would be channeled to the homes.

Riley Duane an executive with the club also welcomed sponsorship and donations, adding they were hard to come by due to the economy.

She said most companies also have their preferred charities and usually support them solely, rarely contributing to other welfare bodies.

Duane, Wilson and their teacher Haeyoung Plouffe(correct) came to the New Straits Times, here yesterday for a briefing on the event.

The event would be split into a 2km and 5km walk. Prizes would also be given to top five male and top five female participants in both categories.

The walk is also expected to be launched by Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

Other events taking place concurrently include band performances by students of the school and a baazar. The host for the event is celebrity chef Abang Brian.

The walk is also supported by Kelab Sukan and Rekreasi NSTP(New Straits Times Press), which would be sending representatives to participate in the event.

Registration fees are set at RM20 before Feb 13, however on site registration is RM50.

Donations for the homes can also be made via the school during the event.
