GEORGE TOWN: An ammonia gas leak triggered panic among members of the public near a mini market in Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah in Bayan Baru this morning.
A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they received a distress call on the incident about 9am.
A hazardous materials (Hazmat) team from the Jalan Perak Fire Station was despatched to the scene.
A total of 13 firemen were deployed to the scene.
"The team traced the leakage to a ice-making factory near the mini market.
"The ammonia stench caused many people in the vicinity to panic," he said.
The team identified the leakage and repaired the malfunctioning valve which was mounted to a gas tank.
