Pas-Ikatan alliance no threat to BN, says MIC

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC does not see the Pas-Ikatan alliance, or any new pact in the opposition, as a threat that could challenge Barisan Nasional.

Its president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said changes in a political pact was not something new and component parties under Barisan Nasional have the upper hand as cooperation between them was strong.

"A lot of things can happen in politics. One day you are here, next day you are there (jumping parties).

"Even our former prime minister was once here.

"Any formation could be built, disbanded and rebuilt. That is the dynamics of politics," he told a press conference at the MIC headquarters today.

BN, he said, had an advantage as it was closer to the people and could be used as a foundation for the party in facing the next General Election.

Dr Subramaniam said the party had, and would always be loyal to Prime Minister and BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak's leadership and would continue supporting all of his plans for the well-being of the people.

Commenting on the Dr Mahathir-Lim Kit Siang declaration, he said the party condemned the action made by Dr Mahathir in being part of the declaration, saying it was undemocratic.

On an unrelated matter, Dr Subramaniam, who is also Health Minister urged marathon organisers who would be conducting their events over the weekend to consider postponing it to a later date in the wake of the heat wave.

"The weather is forecast to worsen over the weekend so I advise organisers who are running marathon events to consider doing it at a later date.

"This is not a good time to be running over 20 to 40 kilometres as it would pose great risk to participants. I hope organisers will consider this factor."

Dr Subramaniam was speaking at the 2015 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia excellent Indian students appreciation ceremony organised by MIC to celebrate 59 students who scored 9A+ and above in last year's examinations.

He said the event was organised to celebrate and motivate the school leavers to pursue their dreams at tertiary level.

"We will ensure that these students receive support and assistance from the government in pursuing their studies to realise their ambition. Events like this also act as a motivator for other students not to give up in their dreams as they too, can be successful like these recipients today."

Also present was Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan.
