'Sabahan' security guards turn out to be Filipino, Indonesian

PUTRAJAYA: Seven security guards who had fake identification cards were arrested during an operation codenamed "Ops ID" last night.

The seven were working at the MCMC Tower 1 and 2 when 10 enforcement officers from the National Registration Department (NRD) conducted surprise checks at the location.

NRD director-general Datuk Seri Sulaiman Keling, in a statement, said the operation was led by NRD's Intelligence and Operation Unit assistant chief Mohd Syafiq Jamaluddin.

"When the enforcement officers raided the premises about 10.30pm last night, several of the security guards tried to flee but failed," he said.

The security guards claimed they were Sabahans, said Sulaiman, adding further investigation had shown that all their ICs were fake, supplied by a syndicate in Sandakan, Sabah, fetching a price of RM500 each.

Upon further investigation, Sulaiman said six of the security guards admitted they were from Basilan, the Philippines and one was from South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

All were detained under the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), adding that if found guilty they could be jailed for not more than three years or fined not more than RM20,000 or both.
