Form Two student dies in freak hammock accident

ALOR SETAR: A Form Two student was killed after she was believed to have become accidentally entangled in a hammock, yesterday evening.

The body of the deceased, identified as Nur Syahirah Mustafa, 14, was found in a sitting position while her head was in the hammock netting in front of her house at Kampung Alor Kumbang, Pendang.

Initial investigations revealed a strangulation mark, believed to have been caused by the hammock on the victim’s neck.

Pendang district police chief Deputy Superintendent Fadzil Hashim said the deceased’s uncle filed a police report on the incident at about 5.30pm yesterday.

According to Fadzil, Syahirah's uncle, who lives next door, went to her house and saw her ‘sleeping’ in the hammock.

“He tried to wake her up several times before he realised that she was not breathing and immediately alerted the deceased's family.

“They rushed her to Yan Hospital and she was pronounced dead at the hospital,” he said in a statement today.

The case has been classified under sudden death pending a post-mortem report.
