PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will resume its Causeway rivalry with Singapore on Sept 1 with the friendly match possibly taking place in either Kuching or Kota Kinabalu.
The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) is keen to allow fans outside the Klang Valley to watch the national team in action.
Last month, the national team played Macau in Malacca while the Under-22 side saw action twice in Seremban.
Meanwhile, Malaysia's two 2019 Asian Cup playoff matches against Timor Leste in early June will both take place in Johor Baru.
FAM general secretary Datuk Hamidin Amin said for the first time, Sabah and Sarawak are next in line to host international matches involving the national team.
"We want fans in every state to be able to watch the national team in action and the respond from the state football associations have been encouraging," Hamidin told reporters at Wisma FAM here on Thursday.
"After Johor Baru, Sabah and Sarawak are next in line to host matches and after that we will go to the northern states."
The national team did play in Kuching once in 2012 but that was a non-international friendly against Sarawak which ended 1-1 at the State Stadium.
The friendly against Singapore is one of five friendly matches which FAM have confirmed along with a trip to Yangon to face Myanmar on May 28.
After playing Timor Leste on June 2 and 7, the national team will embark on a three-match tour of Oceania with games against Papua New Guinea (June 17), New Caledonia (June 22) and Fiji (June 26) lined up.
Malaysia have not faced Singapore since winning 3-1 at the 2014 AFF Cup which knocked hosts Singapore out in the group stage while Malaysia went on to reach the final.
The last time Singapore played in Malaysia they won 3-0 in the group stage of the 2012 AFF Cup at Bukit Jalil.
"Our plan in arranging these friendly matches are not just to play but to win and improve our ranking," said national coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee, referring to Malaysia's all-time low of 174th in the Fifa rankings.
"The match against Myanmar will help us prepare for the Asian Cup playoff round while we the other games will be our preparation for the AFF Cup at the end of the year."
FAM is also in the midst of arranging six more friendly matches for the national team in the second half of the year.
